Volunteer with DarkSky Oregon

DarkSky Oregon is 100% volunteer-driven. We want to preserve the night sky.

We are always looking for like-minded individuals looking to make a difference.

There are many ways to contribute. Here are a few:

  • Community Engagement & Advocacy

Engage with your neighbor, your city council or county commissioner or other officials regarding the importance of preserving dark skies and developing lighting ordinances that support them.

  • Dark Sky Friendly Lighting

Introduce others to the best lighting fixtures that preserve dark skies throughout our neighborhoods, communities and businesses.

  • Dark Sky Place Designations

Assist communities, parks, and other pristine sites in Oregon to obtain international certification as a dark sky place.

  • Education, Outreach & Events

Help staff community festivals and outreach events across Oregon through tabling and spreading the word about the effects of light pollution and benefits of proper outdoor lighting.

  • Environmental Impacts

Raise awareness regarding how improper outdoor lighting can harm human health, wildlife and migrating birds and insects. Support efforts to reverse these trends.

  • Marketing & Social Media

Inform the public about DarkSky Oregon’s mission through various marketing efforts, including the development of new media and maintenance of a robust website and ongoing social media presence.

  • Sky Quality Measurements & Monitoring

Support individual and group efforts to obtain accurate data for dark sky places across Oregon through the use of sky quality meters to measure sky glow, light trespass and changes over time. Activities include installation, teaching others, downloading and reporting data and taking nighttime photographs.
