Measuring Skyglow from Orbit

Images of the Earth’s surface at night capture the light from artificial and natural sources. Researchers process the night time data in conjunction with a model of how light scatters in the atmosphere to calculate the amount of skyglow generated. Data from the NASA VIIRS orbiting instrument is commonly used in this regard. DarkSky Oregon has acquired several useful skyglow models of the entire state.
